25 Things About Me

25 Things About Me

Today I turn a quarter of a century old! Just for fun, I’m sharing 25 things about myself. Sometimes it’s nice to know a little more about the person on the other side of the screen, so here you go…

  1. My favourite animals are pigs.
  2. The farthest north in the world I have been is York, England; the farthest south is Chiloe Island in Chile.
  3. I have never broken any bones.
  4. My favorite book–since I’m forcing myself to choose–is Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens.
  5. I adore learning. The things that are currently on my “learn more about list” are probiotics, space, epigenetics, local edible plants, and html coding.
  6. My first job was as a cashier at Chick-fil-A. It was a wonderful experience, and I never got tired of the food, ever.
  7. I’m an avid mystery reader, but I prefer the Golden Age classics: Christies, Sayers, Carr, Queen, etc.
  8. I’m the fourth of six kids–I have three older sisters and two younger brothers.
  9. My favourite reality TV show is The Amazing Race. I’d like to be on it someday with my sister.
  10. I love water, especially the ocean, and I never want to live too far from it. (Or at least from Lake Michigan.)
  11. I love fried shrimp.
  12. Summer and fall are my favourite seasons.
  13. My sister and I used to pass notes in class–in Elvish! (Tolkien’s)
  14. My pet growing up was a lop-eared rabbit named Mr. Bungles.
  15. The musicals I like best are Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang and The Sound of Music.
  16. Coke beats Pepsi every time.
  17. I met my husband on our very first day of college.
  18. The best semester of my college career was spent studying abroad at Oxford University. (Eric came, too!)
  19. I’m competitive. I play games to win.
  20. I use British spelling.
  21. I go barefoot whenever I can.
  22. I knew all along what team Severus Snape was on.
  23. Creme brulee is my favourite dessert.
  24. We went to Boston for our honeymoon.
  25. I still wish on stars and at 11:11 (which my sister and I call “four number time”).

Do we share anything in common? Tell me something about you!

  1. I LOVE this. 🙂 We probably already figured this out, but Joshua and I met on our first day of college, too!

I’ve also never broken any bones.

My first job was also as a cashier.

I don’t watch much reality TV at all, but when I still lived with my parents, I liked Amazing Race– the only “reality” TV that actually seemed interesting and realistic.

“The Sound of Music” is my favorite musical ever, but “Mary Poppins” takes a close second (still Dick van Dyke, and I just love Julie Andrews!).

And I can’t say I also knew all along what team Snape was on, but I’m glad we share a love of Harry Potter. 🙂 🙂

    Happy birthday, dear!

    1. Yeah, I love Mary Poppins, too. Have you seen Thoroughly Modern Millie? It’s another one with Julie Andrews. Very quirky, but it was one of my favourites when I was young.

I love how we share so many things in common!

  2. Epigenetics are fascinating! Scientific American has an article on them every once in a while. I’m hoping I’ll get to study them in class sometime this year.

I am still jealous of your semester in Oxford, but forever grateful that Matthew brought Elbow home with him. Some of the best music ever.

I also met my man (boyfriend) at college! Though we didn’t meet till my last year, and just started dating a month ago… And here I thought I had safely left the marriage mill on the hill. 😉

    Happy birthday, sweet Elsie!

    1. Apparently the hill has a long shadow(:

I’m planning on writing some blog posts on epigenetics this year–I have access to the university library through Eric, which is pretty sweet.

You should still go to Oxford. Find a way, any excuse. And I’ll come, too!

  3. Okay, I love Sayers and enjoy Christie as well but I haven’t heard of those other two authors. I’m always on the lookout for good mystery book recommendations. Which books should I start which for Carr and Queen?

    1. I liked Dark of the Moon by John Dickson Carr. It’s set in South Carolina, which is familiar territory for me (I grew up in the coastal South). Carr is famous for “locked room” and impossible cases. Christie was a fan of Carr’s.

Ellery Queen is the pen name for two American co-authors. I haven’t read much by him (them), but I enjoyed Calamity Town. The Glass Village is on my to-read list!

      1. Yay! Thanks. Of course, our library only has two by Ellery Queen and none by Carr. 🙂 I might have to do an interlibrary loan request. Looking forward to some good mystery reading.

        1. Enjoy! I love reading mystery stories in the autumn (well, on the beach in summer, too). But chilly, darkening autumn days outside, with a warm afghan and a cuppa…just the right atmosphere.

  4. Happy Birthday! I also like pigs, and collected pig figurines for years, as people always gave them to me as gifts! I adore learning, am a teacher, and also love teaching. A dear friend in her 90’s once told me: “Never, never stop reading and learning, and get your sleep every night”. I love fried shrimp, fall, water, going barefoot, Sound of Music, and Coke (though I can’t drink sodas anymore). My lop-eared rabbit was named Pierre Lapin. I also go barefoot, wish on stars, and use British spelling (or sometimes French) quite often. I also love gardening, cooking, reading, collecting a variety of things, seasons, sewing, needlework, fiber arts, flower arranging, and on and on. 🙂 I love cats and most dogs, watching birds in the wild (used to have a ring-necked turtle dove), art, music and dance. Thanks for all your great writings!

    1. Lesa, I’m replying late, but thank you! I wish I knew you in real life. I used to be a teacher…just after college for about three years. I don’t drink sodas anymore, either, although I still choose to have Coke a couple of times a year! I think it is wonderful that you had a lop named Pierre Lapin! That just seals the deal that we would be friends in real life.

      1. I agree, Elsie! What did you teach? I taught in the classroom for years, and eight years ago moved to the music room, teaching K-5, plus two LifeSkills classes in a public school. I love it and have a lot of fun with my students. I adore Beatrix Potter and Tasha Tudor, so I had to name my lop that. My husband and I went to England and Scotland in 2012, and we went to Beatrix’s house (and also Wordsworth’s) and want to go back. Hope you have a wonderful week. Thanks for replying!
        Lesa

  5. Your are a girl after my own reading heart! Love Harry Potter(ravenclaw pride) lol, and two of my all time favorites are “And then there were none” and “ Murder on the orient express”! I also enjoy the water, but here in OK it is mainly the lake.

  6. Greetings from an almost 60 year old! You young women (my daughter included) are so amazing. I have learned more from your generation than I have from my contemporaries. I just found you today and can tell we are kindred spirits. Decades apart, but kindred nonetheless. Looking forward to learning more from you. I have just finished my first round of Whole30 and I loved it. Trying to incorporate whole foods exclusively into our diet.
Just so you know – A Tale of Two Cities is my favorite book of all time( that and Les Miserables). We share many of the same favorites. I am a lover of all things Dickens. And Catherine Marshall. I found Heathcliff despicable, too!
I look forward to getting to know you!
