This post is part of a Monday series on simplifying. The series began with 10 Reasons to Start Simplifying Now. I'm enjoying this mission of simplifying my home. I find the results satisfying: our home has more breathing room, and the things I choose to keep are useful or special in some way. The process of simplifying isn't always simple, though, and I often make a mess while I'm "evaluating" items. When I go on my simplifying kicks, Eric groans and calls me a holy terror. "Are you simplifying again?" He asks, as I wander around the apartment, peering into cupboards and rummaging through closets. "Yes! It's good, though! Really. ... Continue Reading
Flourish in your home with these ways to simplify, declutter, streamline your routines, and create beauty.
When I got married two and a half years ago, I couldn't wait to start homemaking. It had always been my dream. Growing up, I was the little girl who played with baby dolls and loved helping Mom in the kitchen. I made up stories while I did chores around the house. I pretended that I was Snow White tidying the cottage while the dwarves (my family members) were out in the mines. For my birthday I asked my Mema to sew me a pink apron. Fast forward about fifteen years. I still find joy in homemaking. This is meaningful work, and pleasant. As a brand-new wife, running my own home wasn't a terrible adjustment. It's something I'd been ... Continue Reading
Stuff. Why do we let it take up so much of our money, thoughts, and space? Maybe your closet is stuffed with clothes that make you feel boring or that scratch and itch. Perhaps your pantry is full of food items that need to be consolidated, consumed, or thrown out. Or maybe the cupboard below your bathroom sink is a black hole for half-empty lotion bottles. It's time for a purge! Want to join me? I'm on a mission to simplify my home. You see, I'm tired of hanging onto things for all of the old reasons: "I had it when I was little," "It still fits me," "I think I might start using it..." Nope. Not listening anymore. Stuff, ... It's like magic: March arrives, and suddenly the snow is melting and temperatures are rising. Not that we don't expect more snow--especially if this year we actually get the "typical" Michigan winter folks have been promising us. (Because last year was a joke, right?) Meantime, I'm enjoying the slightly warmer weather and dreaming of all the things we're going to be planting in a few weeks. I've probably mentioned that we live in an apartment, right? That won't keep us from planting a garden, though, thanks to Jami's eBook Apartment Gardening. I've been scouring the web for additional gardening resources and articles, and I thought I'd ... When you try to avoid health hazards in your food, it's only natural that that mindset will flow into other areas of your life as well. That was my experience. Why would I assemble a pantry full of healthful ingredients yet ignore the toxic ingredients in my beauty products or cleaning supplies? A natural kitchen is no place for toxic chemicals, but I had plenty lined up under my kitchen sink! One of my summer goals was to assemble a caddy of natural cleaning supplies, so as I've been using up old cleaners, I've replaced them with "cleaner" options. While there are some fun recipes out there for homemade cleaning products, I'm convinced ... Continue Reading
