I’d forgotten what it tastes like to bite into a fresh peach. And then, a couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of remembering.

It took all of three seconds to fall in love with peaches yet again.

Three seconds. One…seeing the fruit pulling the branches down to the grass. Two…the lightest touch, and one soft, heavy peach fell into my hand. Three…my lips brushed the soft skin and suddenly sweet liquid was flowing over my tongue and filling my mouth with an explosion of summer.

Three seconds and I was dreaming of peach pies and peach ice cream and peach preserves, of pulling peaches from the freezer in the dead of winter to remember a hot Alabama afternoon in mid July.

Any abundance of fresh fruit makes me ambitious. I want to gather the harvest by the bucketful and make it into everything I can think of.

But this summer, that won’t happen. The reality is I’m busy enough figuring out how to care for my family now that we’re three instead of two. And that’s perfectly fine. My peach ambitions will be reawakened next summer, I’m sure. For now, it’s my pace to toss fresh peaches in the blender and call it good.

Here’s a drink I whipped up the other day that’s just the right proportions of easy and delicious. And when I don’t even have time to blend a smoothie? I’ll always be happy with that simple pleasure of a single fresh peach.
