Ingredients

  • 2 cup unbleached white flour (or a combination of white and white whole wheat)
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • poppy seeds (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients except milk, poppy seeds, and butter Stir in enough milk to make a soft dough. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface; knead until smooth, about 5 minutes. Place in greased bowl; turn dough over so greased side is facing up. Cover and let rest in a warm place for 3 hours.

  2. Place 2 baking sheets in the oven; heat oven to 450 degrees. Divide dough into 6 or 8 equal parts. Flatten each part on a lightly floured surface, rolling out into rounds or semi-circles. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with poppy seeds, if desired.

  3. Place bread on hot baking sheets and return to the oven for 6-8 minutes, or until the bread is firm.
